Discover more behind the scene on Rousselot’s continued collaboration with Papendal. An interview with Rousselot Health & Nutrition’s Global Director Gaetan Noiret.

Firstly, what type of collagen peptide is Peptan? Is it type 1, type 2, hydrolyzed, undenatured? What makes this type optimal for sports performance?

Peptan® is Rousselot®’s leading type 1 collagen peptide ingredient – a bioactive, hydrolyzed solution that is easy to digest. Type 1 collagen is the most common form found in the body, responsible for maintaining healthy, supple skin, tendons, ligaments and muscle tissue. Demanding sports training sessions put the muscular-skeletal system under increased pressure, heightening the risk of strains, sprains and other injuries. In a clinical study conducted in partnership with scientists from Newcastle University, Peptan was shown to help to reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness and support muscle repair, contributing to a faster post-exercise recovery and performance improvement. [1] Beyond these science-backed benefits, Peptan collagen peptides are also 100% traceable, safe and World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) compliant, giving athletes an effective sports recovery solution they can trust.

2. The PR mentions “real-world data on the benefits of Peptan collagen peptides” – what kind of studies/tests are you conducting with Dutch athletes at Papendal?

As part of our ongoing partnership with Papendal, we have worked closely with dieticians, coaches and athletes to identify the optimal level of collagen intake to support sporting performance. Throughout 2018 for example, we participated in the Eat2Move Relay Project 208, a scheme aimed at creating a best-practice guide for collagen hydrolysate supplementation for volleyball players. The project involved analyzing data on the effects of various supplementation strategies for the Dutch National men's volleyball team, which helped to form a strong basis of ‘real-world’ data to inform further research in the field of sports nutrition.

3. “Rousselot will supply Papendal’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes with Peptan” – is that referring just to the athletes representing the Netherlands?

Yes – Papendal is the largest national facility for elite sports and education in the Netherlands and is also the country’s main Olympic Training Center. Our partnership with Papendal means we can continue to bring the benefits of high-quality collagen supplements to the Netherland’s prospective Olympic competitors, while also helping the wider public recognize the value of proper nutrition for sports recovery.

4. Are there more countries to come? What is the connection with the Netherlands?

As a Darling Ingredient’s Health brand, Rousselot’s media communications are dispatched from the Darling Ingredients headquarters, based in Irving, TX, USA. The Rousselot brand however, originates from the Netherlands, where it still bases its headquarters. We have a long-standing relationship with Papendal based on our earlier collaborations, but moving forward we are looking to expand our efforts more broadly to raise awareness of the importance of sports nutrition across multiple countries. Besides training the Dutch national teams, Papendal also hosts many foreign athletes and has an international collaboration network.

5. Why are sports recovery solutions at an all-time high?

Prior to the pandemic, consumers were looking to get more active - whether that meant pushing themselves harder at the gym, incorporating a weekly jog into their routines, or simply maintaining a good level of mobility into later life. Lockdowns, travel bans and stay-at-home orders put a pause on the booming exercise trend, but with restrictions beginning to ease consumers are keen to get back to their old routines. Awareness of the importance of proper sports recovery was already growing pre-pandemic, but with Innova Market Analysis reporting that the trend has reached almost 35% market penetration, it seems more people than ever are looking for products that can help them re-build their fitness levels, quickly and safely.

6. How does Rousselot plan to help educate athletes and the general public on the central role collagen plays in maintaining healthy bones, skin, muscles and joints?

As previously mentioned, a key aspect of our partnership with Papendal is education. Many people do not fully understand the difference between general healthy eating and sports nutrition – for example, the increased need for protein and supplements which support muscle repair, such as Peptan. Through our various collaborations with Papendal’s in-house dieticians, resource hubs like our Peptan.com website and our recently launched ‘Inner Strength’ campaign spotlighting the importance of collagen in sports recovery, we are making our in-depth knowledge of sports nutrition available to a wider audience than ever before.
